Five things you should know about Goats

Here at Buckledge farm, we’ve come to appreciate that goats are more than just barnyard animals-they’re intelligent, curious and full of personality. Whether you’re new to homesteading or just goat-curious, here are a few simple things to know about these incredible creatures.

  1. Goats are social animals and thrive in herds. A single goat alone will become stressed, which can lead to health problems or behavioral issues. If you’re considering adding goats to your life, always plan to have at least two. No, thank you for it.
  2. not all goats are the same. There are over 300 breeds of goats worldwide. Here at Buck ledge farm we focus on ADGA registered Nigerian and Oberhasli dairy goats.  These breeds are known for their rich milk and calm, friendly personalities-perfect for homesteaders and families
  3. Goats are smart, and sometimes too smart. Goats can learn to open gates, on latch, doors, and find the one spot in your fence that isn’t secure.  They are clever, curious and highly food, motivated, making them a fun and occasionally challenging farm companion.
  4. They need more than just grass. Contrary to popular belief, goats are lawnmowers. They are browsers, which means they prefer shrubs, leaves, bark and weeds. Very diet, supports healthy, milk, production, and overall wellness.
  5. Goats make amazing milk, soap, and much more. Goat milk is naturally homogenized, high in calcium easier to digest, then cows milk. At Buck ledge farm, we use it, not only for fresh drinks, but we also use it in our handcrafted, soaps and freeze dried products.
